Art-Rite 16

Art-Rite 16
21.12.2012 to 14.01.2013
Printed Matter, New York ↗︎

Printed Matter is pleased to feature a presentation of the complete catalogue of Boabooks. On the occasion, Izet Sheshivari will also launch a special reappropriation issue of Art-Rite Magazine, imagining what the missing issue No. 16 would have been had editors Joshua Cohn, Edit DeAk, and Walter Robinson produced it. The project was born from ongoing research by Izet Sheshivari into alternative New York presses and will result in a future exhibition. It follows Blank Book Makers, an exhibition held in 2012.

In addition to a presentation of books, Izet Sheshivari will exhibit a selection of special prints and editions.
This includes a project stemming from Inventory of Destruction, a folded newsprint comprised of short statements collected by Éric Watier recounting the destruction of various artworks. Five newsprint pages have been altered as the result of ink blotting when print rollers were voluntarily stopped mid-run.

Another work, Post Vinyle, presents the homemade picture discs of Swiss artist Frédéric Post produced under his pirate records label Miracole. From this edition, five copies contain a signed and numbered original handmade vinyl by Frédéric Post. The Fog is a Light Darkness looks at the nature of drawing through the sculptural paper installations of Miriam Sturzenegger. Five copies feature a wood case (wood, plaster, white paint), signed and numbered by the artist and presented during the show.

The Next Page

The Next Page
15.09.2016 – 18.09.2016
NYABF, MoMA PS1, New York

The Next Page offers a dense and precise view of the contemporary creation of the artist's book, beyond its commercial character, it is a real encounter. The exhibition space is located within a historical perimeter for the artists who visit it, and the mixed audience of PS1 is very important. In fact, it is one of the most diverse and lively ephemeral bookstores to date.

The Next Page brought together a selection of works from eight Swiss publishers, six of whom had never before presented their books in the United States.
Within the context of the fair, the exhibition highlighted this selection of works by these publishers and created the tools necessary to mediate and immerse visitors. Of the 280 participants, only twelve were Swiss.

In this way, The Next Page highlighted its structures through curatorial articulation. This action was the most direct way of involving the Swiss publishers selected by The Next Page with the visitors to the exhibition in a coherent, fascinating and dynamic way, while also representing the association's past and future projects.
The Next Page catalogue presents questions developed in advance of the event through a selection of books by Izet Sheshivari. The book contains twenty-four specific questions to publishers and as many answers. They are reproduced here because they reflect important points in our thinking and concerns for the future of the artist's book.

What are the three most important questions to ask a publisher?
What stories interest you?
What is the future of type design?
In what way do you make a profit from your books?
What is your greatest expense?
What three pieces of advice would you give to artists who will make books in the future?
What has been the best question ever asked about artists’ books?
What is your latest experiment?
What do you enjoy about publishing books?
What are the artists’ book of your dreams?
If you only had the right to distribute your books in one country, which country would you choose?
Do you think there are any limits to what you can do?
How do you get readers’ attention?
Does your nationality influence your practice?
What do you think about territories and categories?
What do you like about printing?
Why is binding important?
What is the ultimate question?
What do you think about book swapping?
What do you think about intellectual property?
What do you read?
What do you think about working with famous artists?
What has been your greatest breakthrough?
Are you more afraid of police or printers?
Why did you become a publisher?
What is your editorial view of books as a medium?
What do you think about words and language?
How do you choose the authors you work with?
In your catalogue, which book should I read, and why?
When you design a book, what are your prevailing motivations?
Why did you become a publisher?
Do you think book publishers are bene tting from hyperlinks?

Following the invitation by ECAL/Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne and Alexandru Balgiu, Izet Sheshivari curated and set up The Liberated Page bookcase (24m) with the help of Simon Mager presenting 160 books and ephemera from the archive. Exploring the history and the evolution of writing in the field of contemporary art and practise, this exhibition took the form of a stroll, along the entire length of ECAL hall, to view a selection of book from my cabinet displayed in conversation or tête-à-tête.

Orphan Papers
12.11.2017 – 29.01.2018
Sitterwerk Art Library, St. Gall ↗︎

The Sitterwerk Art Library is dynamic in more ways than one. In addition to the library's unique cataloguing robot, the books themselves contain a multitude of notes, newspaper cutouts, and ephemera which open up new insights, histories, and lines of enquiry. These ephemera were left behind by the avid book collector, Daniel Rohner, as well as other individuals, who donated books to Sitterwerk.

The exhibition Orphan Papers highlighted how these things left behind are as much part of the Sitterwerk library as the books themselves. The ephemera were catalogued and curated, and displayed within the library in such a way that invited interaction. Library visitors could continue to access and read the books as usual, but the exhibition allowed them to do so on top of, and surrounded by, the personal notes and cutouts which were left behind. The exhibition was therefore an optimistic invitation for visitors to add their personal voices to continuing research, and to enter other people's universes in order to explore their own. The presence of the Sitterwerk's material archive lent poignancy to these voices which have now passed away. In addition, it represented a multitude of potential personal futures.

When artists' books are exhibited, they often become venerated objects, which undermines their purpose. Izet Sheshivari manually cut circles through each page of a selection of 28 Boabooks and displayed each circle in the order of the pages on an 18m. long wall at the Caen School of Applied Art. This radical intervention in the bodies of these books was intended to playfully undermine any veneration of the books and also to reveal a construction or internal structure of the work that is not otherwise visible.
The Liberated Page
21.10.2014 – 28.12.2014
Le Commun, Geneva

The recent evolution and democratisation of printing techniques has encouraged many artists to re-evaluate their position in relation to literature, to books, and to the page. Dedicated to the exploration of new practices within art book production, The Liberated Page considered the page for its simultaneously poetic, structural and physical elements.

The exhibition highlighted a wide range of interventions and approaches, and discussed in particular, how artists invent new books and why their invention opens up new possibilities for the page – as well as for communication and language.

The biennale highlighted the work of several contemporary artists concerned with the page, in conversation with such historic examples as books from artists Dieter Roth, Ed Ruscha, and Seth Siegelaub, bookworks from publishing houses Something Else Press and Ecart (including work by Daniel Spoerri, Robert Filliou, Emmett Williams, and Dick Higgins), an anthology by Guy Schraenen, the Mèla post card book from Maurizio Nannucci, as well as the complete Franklin Furnace archive.

During the period of the Russian avant-garde in the 1920s and also worldwide in the 1960s, artists explored the numerous possibilities which were available for the alternative dissemination of their works.

During the 1960s, Mail Art subsequently became very popular, presenting as it did an easy way for artists to utilise their private and personal sphere to form a ‘cultural strategy’ – using works of art as an alternative method of communication. It was in this climate that artists’ books really began to proliferate, and as documented ten years later by the seminal book artist, poet and critic Ulises Carrión, artists’ books could now potentially exist autonomously, and communicate with a new ‘artistic language’.
The title of the exhibition, The Liberated Page, reuses the title of an anthology which was dedicated to the review Typographica. This review was founded, conceived and edited by the celebrated editor and designer Herbert Spencer, and whilst the duration of its publication was short – a total of 32 issues were published between 1949 and 1967 – its influence has been profound, reaching far beyond its modest distribution and circulation. Spencer used different types of papers and typography to present an eclectic range of topics from Braille poetry to sex and typography. The review provided a critical alternative to the dominant conventions of the printing industry and tastes inherited from the 1920s. It made a strong contribution to the spread of ‘European’ concrete poetry in the United States, and published one of the first British articles on the subject, at the moment when concrete poetry was just becoming a worldwide phenomenon.

Spencer’s role as designer/editor, able to think both visually and verbally – merging images and words – presented a totally renewed relationship with the page. It is this sprit and potential for a renewed debate and critical conversation about our relationship with the page, and our communication with one another, which The Liberated Page aims to provoke and encourage.

A number of contemporary artists and publishers concerned with the renewal of the book format were invited to take part to share their perspectives.

These included Manuel Burgener, Raffaella Chiara, Norbert Costin, Elizabeth Lebon, Louise Guerra, Václav Pozárek, Hinrich Sachs, Claudia de La Torre and Ofer Wolberger.

The Liberated Page benefitted from the support of the Fonds municipal d’art contemporain de Genève ↗︎, Pro Helvetia, Fondation suisse pour la culture ↗︎, Loterie Romande and la Ville de Genève. ↗︎.

Blank Book Makers
2.06.2012 – 17.06.2012
Fonderie Kugler, Geneva

The exhibition Blank Book Makers and the catalogue aimed to address the latest developments in artists’ book history, and gave a dynamic overview of inspiring recent works. Included in the exhibition were many books dealing with topics such as emptiness, space, or the very substance of pages, as well as books which explore the book in itself or bookworks publications. With the sheer abundance of interesting publications, showing all facets and aspects of contemporary developments through images would have been extremely challenging.

We therefore chose to identify and showcase the current ideas and needs of the artist’s book medium. This approach greatly benefitted from the efforts carried out at the large annual artists’ book conventions, such as Printed Matter’s New York Art Book Fair and many more. The exhibition also owed a great deal to all the mediation activities carried out via independent information networks, which play a significant part in promoting artists and their books, and was in itself an expression of gratitude to all the hard-working people behind these exhibitions and platforms, as well as to specialized booksellers. This also extends to directors and curators of institutions, collectors, and publishers for the ways in which they made their works and knowledge available to us. The Blank Book Makers exhibition in Geneva and its supporting body of work could not have been carried out without their generous contributions.

Boabooks are created in collaboration with artists and authors who are consistently taking a critical and experimental approach. We open up countless possibilities for all stages of the book format’s conception and production. Once created, each book takes on its own identity, referring the reader to countless disciplines, experiences, subjects and themes. Going beyond such postmodernist conceptions of the book format however, Boabooks exists as a distinctive diving board for critical thinking.
